2. Dr. Steven Dubinett, director
of the UCLA Lung Cancer Research Program at the Jonsson Cancer
Center and professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and
Critical Care Medicine, are investigating Celebrex's potential to
prevent lung cancer( cancer-related research on the
anti-inflammatory drug Celebrex).
3. Dr. Jenny Mao, lead
investigator for the studies. Mao also is a researcher at UCLA's
Jonsson Cancer Center, an assistant professor, director of the
Life-Lung Bronchoscopy Program and director of the Comprehensive
Second-Lung Cancer Surveillance and Chemoprevention Program at the
UCLA School of Medicine.
4. Announced a need for
participants in a study on estrogen's effect on memory, mood and
brain function in perimenopausal women. Melinda Morgan, a
post-doctoral fellow in adult psychiatry at the UCLA
Neuropsychiatric Institute, is conducting the study.
5.The National Lung Screening Trial
Enrolling healthy men and women in research to detect lung cancer.
WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY?
The purpose of this study is to compare two ways of detecting lung cancer: standard chest X-ray and helical computed tomography (CT) scan. Both chest x-rays and CT scans are used in an effort to find lung cancer early. So far, neither chest x-rays nor CT scans has been shown to reduce a person’s chance of dying from lung cancer. This study will attempt to show which test is better at reducing deaths from this disease.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
· Healthy men and women aged 55-75 years
· Current or former smokers who have smoked heavily, or have smoked for many years
· People who have no known cancers or treatment for cancer within the past 5 years (exclude non-melanoma skin cancer and in-situ cancers)
· Not currently enrolled in any other screening or cancer prevention trial
WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE?
NLST offers participants:
· The possibility of detecting a small lung cancer that may still be curable
· The chance to contribute to medical research and to help others and future generations
· Referrals to smoking cessation resources if you want to quit
WHAT IS INVOLVED IF YOU QUALIFY TO PARTICIPATE?
· Complete detailed questionnaires
· Perform a Pulmonary Function Test
· Give samples of blood, urine, and sputum (phlegm)
· Being assigned by chance to receive a CT scan or CXR once a year for three years
· Provide health history information every six months for up to 8 years
HOW DO YOU FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE STUDY?
This is a multi-center clinical trial sponsored jointly by the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The study is being conducted at UCLA by Dr. Jonathan Goldin in the Department of Radiology. For more information, contact the UCLA Study Coordinator @ (310) 206-4624 or NLST@mednet.ucla.edu <mailto:NLST@mednet.ucla.edu>.
